What Kind of Food do You Like?

By Rev. Malcolm Patterson

1 Peter 2 v 1-3
"Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, all evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious."

Whatever our gender, nationality or culture we have been born into we entered the world right from birth with several reflexes. A baby is born with certain reflexes to protect them during their first few weeks after making their presence known in the world. These reflexes will disappear shortly and be replaced with voluntary movement as the baby develops. It is the responsibility of doctors to check these reflexes to ensure that the central nervous system is working correctly. These reflexes will include the diving reflex. If a baby is placed in water, their throat will close so that the water is not swallowed.

Then there is also the group reflex, the search reflex, the crawling reflex, and one other vital one which is the sucking reflex. This reflex ensures the child is able to feed.

A new born child is either breast fed by a mothers milk or bottle fed. The reason why milk is fed to new born babies is because it contains some good nutrients for the body such as vitamins A, C, D. The milk also contains proteins, carbohydrates, iron and sodium.

Milk is marketed as a good drink which builds up the body and helps it grow stronger. Peter when writing to converted Jews told them as "new born babes desire the sincere milk of the word." Using this metaphor he says, that if we feed on the right food then we will have a healthy spiritual lifestyle.

How often like milk with some of its good removed, we find the Word of God diluted and the end result stunted growth. There are many varieties of milk to be found in our supermarkets. Whole milk. This is milk with nothing added or removed. Whole standardised milk is whole milk standardised to a minimum fat content of 3.5%.

Semi Skimmed milk which is the most popular type of milk in the U.K with a fat content of 1.7%. Skimmed milk has nearly all the fat removed. It contains slightly more calcium than whole milk and lower levels of fat soluble vitamins, particularly vitamin A, as this is lost when the fat is removed. One could talk about 1% milk, organic milk, Jersey and Guernsey milk, flavoured milk, heat treated milk, pasteurised milk, sterilised milk, UHTmilk, evaporated milk, condensed milk, filtered milk, dried powdered or untreated (raw) milk. All milk sold through supermarkets and milkmen has to be heat-treated (pasteurised) to kill harmful bacteria.

Desire the sincere milk of the Word of God

Just as a mothers milk contains antibodies to fight infection, so the new born child of God will need God's Word so that they can develop in their new born faith. During the 72-92 hours after childbirth a mother's milk contains
colustrum which helps to build up the immune system of the baby.

Peter says that we war with a real foe, the devil, that is like a virus that is out to find a weak host to devour. Satan is angry when we get saved and he will always be out to seek to cause us to stumble.

Warren Wiersbe said, "man's wisdom is no match for Satan's cunning. Our only defence is the inspired Word of God."

In an age when most people want a 'quick fix' of fast food, drive in restaurants and 'milk shake' type supplements for the Word of God we must ever be aware that we need to feast on the pure Word of God.

What to do with God's Word

1. Meditate

Joshua 1:8 "The book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate therein day and night that thou mayst observe to do according to all that is written therein."

Don't use God's Word as a fast food solution. Faith cometh by hearing (not reading) the Word. Its easy to just read the Word but harder to hearken to its precepts. Reflect throughout the day what you have read and what God is showing you from His Word. Record-write down the Word and that will help us remember. "Be ye doers of the Word and not hearers only." James 1:22

2. Believe the milk of the Word

Thank God for books and Bible helps but act on the Word. The story is told of how a multi millionaire granted a believer 10 minutes of his time for an interview. The Christian had went to great lengths of preparation beforehand. He later remarked, "It was a humiliating thought. I wasn't in the habit of the same earnest preparation for meeting God." How changeable we become and treat God as if we were over familiar with Him. Muslims spend several hours in bodily preparation for their five daily sessions in prayer but how often, at the drop of a pin, we can set aside the unchanging Word of God.

3. Drink the Word of God

2 Timothy 3:16 "All Scripture is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works."

Ask God to increase your Spiritual reflex, and then as you develop; you will continue to grow and move on to the meat of the Word of God. 1 Cor.13:11 "Open my eyes that I may behold wondrous things out of Thy law."
Don't let the fast food and the quick fix solutions of the world quench your desire for what is really important for your Spiritual growth.
